Shell, in tradition, has come to represent our baptism---even the dishes used by priests to pour water over the heads of catechumens are often shaped like scallops. It has come be closely associated with Saint James, the Apostle, and his missionary journey to Iberia. Also, from shells we retrieve pearls, the material of the gates of heaven.

 

Blue is the color most associated with heaven and the most used color in the Tabernacle of the Temple. The Virgin Mary often wears blue in her apparitions, and it is the color of God’s divine grace.

 

Purple is historically the color of royalty and great wealth. In the church, it denotes suffering and is worn during Lent. It can serve as a balance to the joys of spring or as a reminder of Christ’s kingship. It was also one of the colors, along with blue, scarlet, and white, used in the veils and carpets of the Tabernacle of the temple.

 

Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of the Americas, appeared to Juan Diego at Tepeyac in 1531. She has become a national symbol of Mexico and her shrine is the most visited Catholic site in the world.
