Goldstone is actually no stone, but a glittering glass infused with copper. Sometimes called monkstone from folklore associating its creation with a monastic order, it is also at times called gold sandstone.

 

Bloodstone, also called heliotrope, has a long history of ornamental use, dating back at least to the Babylonians, even if the legend goes that it was formed when Christ’s blood fell on the rocks below the cross. It is a form of chalcedony with red inclusions, and was used in the Middle Ages in sculptures depicting martyrdom.  

 

Garnet is quite possibly the first stone in Aaron’s breastplate, as the Hebrew word used means “red stone” and garnet was the most widely used red gem in the area at the time. It is valued throughout history, and traditionally represents Christ’s sacrifice.
